Woodville layout concept

Woodville is one of those unique parts of New Zealand's railway network crying out to be modelled.

At the junction of the Palmerston North - Gisborne line and the Wairarapa line, Woodville's track layout is designed so that trains coming from Napier/Gisborne and heading to the Wairarapa passed through the station, or were able to shunt in the yard. There's a large balloon loop, which is what makes this station really attractive to model:

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

Closer again - the yard plan
Currently I'm thinking there should be two fiddle yards, one on the Wairarapa leg and one on the Napier leg. The Manawatu Gorge leg could be extended later.

  1. You know you should be modeling it in a smaller scale.....
(seriously though, you will need 6' deep to get the balloon loop round, and the area enclosed by it is essentially flat which will be quite challenging modeling wise in a larger scale.. Just my 10 cents worth).

  2. Oh man, but that means selling my whole 1:64 collection :-D No, you're right - it would work better in a smaller scale, and I wouldn't need to get a bigger garage either...
